Social privacy begins with the user

Today, the observer has an interesting editorial piece on how social media is being “misused” by biological parents “stalking” the children they have given up for adoption.

Whilst social media has opened up the avenues of communication and sharing, this is one of the many facets of social media that I worry about. It’s no secret that privacy has become a major issue with sites like facebook, sorry, primarily facebook, however as a whole I think we are opening ourselves up to too much scrutiny in the digital world.

I have already spoken how I worry about geo tagging, it’s basically an advert to say you are not at home or at the office, and that’s worrying in itself. You don’t tell the burglars that the windows are open or that the alarm is off. I know that’s not the purpose of geo tagging but that’s how it is being used.

We can on the other hand become more intelligent with the way we communicate. We can increase our security measures, and be less vocal about where we are and what we are doing. Facebook allows you the security permissions for who sees what, but only we, the human inputting the material is responsible for how we behave.

So, ask yourself this, is it worth acting so differently to your natural habitat than that of the digital realm? Do you know who is really watching?
